Can a world-class athlete get enough protein from a vegetarian diet to compete? I've found that a person does not need protein from meat to be a successful athlete. Moreover, by continuing to eat a vegan diet, my weight is under control, I like the way I look. - Track and field star Carl Lewis, winner of nine Olympic gold medals and 10 World Championship medals

One farmer says to me, "You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with." and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle. - Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862) Walden, 1854

The evidence favoring a new approach [to type 2 diabetes] came first from comparisons of various populations around the world. People whose diets were based mainly on plant-derived foods—that is, rice, noodles, beans, and vegetables—were less likely to develop diabetes, compared with people whose diets are fattier or centered on meatier dishes. For example, among people following traditional Japanese diets, diabetes was rare. Studies show that when people moved from Japan to the U.S. and adopted a Western diet, they were much more likely to develop diabetes.

These studies suggested that meaty, fatty diets cause the body to be more resistant to insulin's actions. Clinical research studies have shown that adopting a low-fat, plant-derived diet does indeed improve insulin sensitivity, help with weight loss, and reduce blood sugar and cholesterol.

Veganism in a Nutshell - by Vegetarian Resource Group

The Dairy Education Board is a public information association that has been formed to let America know that cow's milk is not nature's perfect food for people. We are breaking down the greatest myth in America: that milk does a body good. By establishing a stance against the dairy industry and the tens of billions of dollars spent in propaganda activities such as the milk mustache campaign, we will tell America the other side of the milk story. This group has been established to put the discussion in perspective. The dairy industry has invested an immense amount of money and Americans are still getting sick, breaking bones, getting cancer and osteoporosis. The secret to the "Fountain of Youth" is giving up milk and dairy products. Numerous excellent articles by alpha, by subject, by doctor, by product, by industry and more. Good resource!

Eating should be a pleasure. It should be a celebration and a communion with life...a pleasure all the deeper for being at no one's expense, a pleasure all the more wonderful for being productive of radiant health....You'll see that the very eating habits that can do so much to give you strength and health are exactly the same ones that can significantly reduce the needless suffering in the world, and do much to preserve our ecosystem.
