I have always been a huge animal lover. I became a vegetarian in kindergarten after my 11-year-old cousin teasingly told me where meat came from. Although she wasn't a vegetarian, she was just trying to make me cry—it worked! I was horrified at the idea of eating an animal friend and never touched a piece of meat again. I remember being 5 years old >> MORE

I found the dietary changes very easy to implement. I already loved brown rice, whole wheat bread and oatmeal. I just had to add veggies to replace the chicken, fish, and dairy. My body responded immediately. The next morning I discovered I'd been constipated all my life but didn't know it! >> MORE
A balanced vegan diet comprised of mostly fresh and minimally processed foods is already a step towards reducing your risk of breast cancer, but there are a few superfoods that will make you an even better breast cancer-fighting warrior. Here are five foods that fight breast cancer and should be on your plate daily. >> MORE
There's a strong possibility that the best defense against breast cancer is a naturally low-fat diet, and the best way to go low fat is to go vegan. Unlike animal products which are high in fat, protein, and hormones, all of which increase cancer risks, vegan foods are generally low in fat and calories, high in fiber and healthy complex carbohydrates, and cholesterol free.

"If you can change to a vegan diet, and do it very vigorously, you have enormous power...You can, I believe, prevent most cases of cancer if you combine dietary changes with avoiding tobacco. You could prevent probably 70% or 80% of cancers, just by those steps alone. And, obviously, there's a whole host of other diseases that you would be able to live without."
- Dr. Neal Barnard, President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
A diet high in animal fat, especially the carcinogens found in cooked red meat, and the fat-soluble hormones found in milk from cows can be toxic to your system. According to Arthur Upton, former Director of The National Cancer Institute, "Both breast cancer and colon cancer have been generally associated with the level of consumption of animal fat."
A diet high in fruits and vegetables is beneficial because of the phytochemicals found in produce, which aid the immune system in destroying tumors. Plant-based dieters tend to get the recommended amount of servings of produce while those following a typical Western diet do not. >> MORE

Focus on the New Four Food Groups—grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruit—can provide you with all the nutrients you need. To meet your nutrient needs, select 8 servings of grains, 3 servings of legumes, at least 4 servings of vegetables, and 3 servings of fruit daily. It's important to vary the foods you choose within the food groups, because not only is "variety the spice of life" it helps you to cover all your nutritional bases. The food guide chart will provide you with about 1500 calories [find pdf here]. At the end of the guide, you will find ways to adjust this level of calories to meet your own energy requirements.

Horses in the racing industry are stripped of their life and liberty from birth. They are owned, sold, and forced to perform for the fortune of others. It is outrageous that this type of activity is not only allowed but also glorified as the "sport of kings." Horse racing has no place in an enlightened society, and this modern-day form of slavery has to end immediately. No sentient being should have their life and liberty taken from them.

A shocking new report from the Cornucopia Institute reveals that "natural" breakfast cereals are often loaded with GMOs and chemical pesticides.
Many of the most trusted brands that you might have thought were non-GMO were actually found in tests to contain high levels of genetically engineered ingredients.
According to Cornucopia test results:
A Kashi cereal was found to contain 100% genetically engineered soy.
A Mother's cereal was found to contain 28% genetically engineered corn.
A Whole Foods 365 cereal was found to contain over 50% genetically engineered corn.
A Barbara's Bakery cereal was found to contain over 50% genetically engineered corn.
For more details on the cereal brands that tested non-GMO, read the rest of this report at Natural News.
NOTE: While EVEN supports a vegan diet, we have always encouraged the healthy vegan diet as the best way to thrive---for the animals, the planet and for the health of the individual. Read more about GMOs HERE.

I agree with the Sept. 21 letter [Register-Guard] stating that the global warming debate is over. However, I couldn't disagree more with the writer's conclusion that there's no issue. I believe the evidence and information supporting man-made climate change is credible and comments to the contrary by some politicians and presidential candidates are embarrassing.
My assumption is that most people around the world couldn't care less about US political grandstanding over this topic and would rather see us act like a world leader and help address the problem purposefully.
I'm not a scientist and I don't pretend to have answers for remedying such a complex issue. But I think the debate is answered by a simple question: Is it logical to believe that the rapid increase in world population since the start of the Industrial Revolution would not, at some point, have a profound and hugely negative impact on our planet's climate?
Many people (myself included) would likely agree that climate change over millions of years isn't new to the Earth, but I think many would also agree that drastic change wouldn't naturally occur in just a few hundred years. It's a shame that this issue is such a political pawn. To keep calling it a hoax is, in my opinion, arrogant and dismissive toward those who may be hugely impacted by the inaction of others who won't experience the worst of it and therefore choose to ignore it.

Last week's Corvallis Gazette-Times (Sept 26th) had an article about OSU cafeterias offering options such as vegan and vegetarian dishes in response to growing demand. OSU is not alone. This is happening in schools across the nation as more people are choosing to eliminate or reduce consumption of animals. In fact, the University of North Texas near Dallas - that's right Texas - has opened a completely vegan cafeteria called "Mean Greens".
More people are learning the truth about the suffering that animals endure behind closed doors. It's an issue that is getting on the radar. As a concerned person, I recently read a thought provoking article discussing how eating animals is not an all or nothing dichotomy---you care or don't care, you're vegan or not vegan.
The fact is that almost all of us do care. A Gallup poll found that 96% of Americans oppose cruelty to animals (I wonder about the other 4% ) and virtually everyone dislikes the cruelty of factory farming.
Since just about all of us care, we can make a difference by eating less animal products. It's not an all or nothing choice; when we reduce our consumption of animals, we are opposing cruelty, reducing suffering, and helping animals---not to mention the many other pluses such as helping the environment and our own health. With simple choices each of us has the power to bring more compassion to the world.

Charles, 45, devoted husband and father of two, is shocked to learn not only that he has cardiovascular disease but that the blockages in his heart are so severe that his surgeon refuses to operate. But Charles is a fighter and he'll do whatever it takes to be around to see his kids grow up.
Just like Charles, millions of Americans are sick and they're tired of the pills and operations. What if you could avoid it all, but nobody's willing to tell you how?
Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn of the Cleveland Clinic is trampling the status quo to get the word out. He's the director of one of the longest-running studies in the peer-reviewed scientific literature showing that a plant-based diet can reverse even late stage heart disease. If heart disease, the number one killer in America, can be stopped and often reversed with diet, why aren't people like Charles routinely given this information before being sent to the operating room?

Bulls, and people who defend them, are celebrating the banning of bullfighting in Spain's Catalonia region. The last bullfight in the area took place in Barcelona on September 25, ending a bloody and brutal spectacle for Spain's Northeastern region. After many years of protest and conflict between animal advocates and bullfight supporters, the Catalonia parliament's July 2010 vote to ban bullfights took effect this week.
Bullfights are not fights at all. They are the torture and killing of a wounded, frightened, and psychologically tormented animal. Those who are so inclined can search for bullfight videos on the internet to see for yourself, but we don't recommend it.
The Canary Islands banned bullfighting in 1991. IDA congratulates Catalonia on its compassionate new law and we hope that the rest of Spain, neighboring Portugal, Mexico and France will follow suit.

With our every breaths we cry out for an end to the torture and torment of billions of animals each year; whether they die at the hands of slaughterhouse workers, languishing away on cage floors in vivisection labs, violently electrocuted to death in fur farms or battered, beaten and broken in the 'entertainment' business. We raise our voices for them, for an end, for a compassionate resolution to this culture of killing.
Out of this frustration was born Madline Tees. As activists and artists, we wanted our clothes to spread the message as well---that animal cruelty in every form, in every manner and for every reason is wrong. Our intelligent and socially-conscious tees inform on every issue from animals in 'entertainment' to veganism and vegetarianism and from the mad science of animal 'research' to animals butchered in the name of 'fashion'.
Through our tees we'd like to spread the message that not only is it okay to speak out with your every breath for those who cannot speak out for themselves; but to wear your heart on your sleeve and create a different culture- one in which compassion is our root trait and informs on every decision we make.
Together, we can make a difference. That's our line... what's yours?

Most thermal paper used in cash register machines in restaurants and retail
stores contains Bisphenol A (BPA). Use of BPA is controversial because it is an
estrogen-mimicking chemical that when ingested is linked to a host of physical
ailments.
(See US News and World Report article HERE.)
Café Yumm! is proud to announce that it only uses BPA-free thermal paper in
its Point of Sale Systems (otherwise known as cash registers).
"Eliminating the taint of BPA in even the smallest amounts is important and
the right thing for us to do," explains Co-founder Mark Beauchamp.
"While the price of BPA-free paper is slightly higher than BPA-tainted paper, we believe
that price will drop over the long term as more businesses switch," said Mr.
Beauchamp.
There are currently only two mills in the U.S. that produce BPA-free thermal paper. Supply is limited, but Café Yumm! has developed a vendor relationship that will ensure uninterrupted delivery of BPA-free paper to all Café Yumm! restaurants.

Listen to the heartfelt message in
Marlene's song!
The air is dying, this air we breathe.
We're killing everything we need.
We pollute our bodies and we poison the ground.
What will it take just to turn it around?
The Gulf is dying. The seas are black.
This time I don't think it's coming back.
The men have spoken. The greed extends.
They'll give you money just to make amends.
But when your life is gone it's never the same.
You'll find a new life and forget all the pain.
The change you need is in your heart.
Stop all the killing and make a new start.
They say by one third. We can cut it down.
Into your stomach let plants abound.
The creatures on this planet are here to survive.
Not to be tortured or eaten alive.
