A vegan lifestyle means all our decisions and actions are interwoven and none stands isolated. All life is interconnected. So, decisions about shopping, entertainment, clothes, as well as our meals, are interconnected. And that includes our relationships with the earth, the animals and people!
With that in mind, the following excerpt by H. Jay Dinshah (1933 - 2000), Founder and President, American Vegan Society, from American Vegan magazine explains and summarizes the deeper basis of veganism:
Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word for non-killing and non-harming. It is not mere passiveness, but a positive method of meeting the dilemmas and decisions of daily life. In the western world, it is called Dynamic Harmlessness.
The six pillars of this dynamic philosophy for modern life (one for each letter: A-H-I-M-S-A) are:
ABSTINENCE from Animal Products
HARMLESSNESS with Reverence for Life
INTEGRITY of Thought, Word, and Deed
MASTERY over Oneself
SERVICE to Humanity, Nature, and Creation
ADVANCEMENT of Understanding and Truth

Each year during Canada's seal massacre—which usually begins in early March—tens of thousands of gentle baby seals are shot or have their skulls crushed. Standing no chance against armed sealers, many infant seals are bludgeoned before they even eat their first solid meal or learn how to swim. Sealers routinely hook seals in the eye, cheek, or mouth to avoid damaging their pelts, then drag the seals across the ice, skin them, and leave them to die. Meanwhile, their mothers are forced to watch from just a few feet away, crying out as their young pups are killed.
This is the largest slaughter of marine mammals anywhere in the world, and it must be stopped.

Ever since I was a child, my whole life has been centered on food. Whenever things with my alcoholic father got too bad, my mom would pack me and my sister up, and we'd all go on an eating binge of candy, hot dogs, potato chips, whatever was quick and cheap. By the time I was in 6th grade I weighed nearly 200 pounds. I have sought solace in food ever since.

Evidence suggests that a hefty portion of our current epidemics of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and other health problems are, in fact, nothing but the natural outcomes of food habits exerting their effects year after year.

In 2009 people watched in horror as Eight Belles was ridden to her death at the Kentucky Derby. Her jockey whipped her as she ran flat out on the hard dirt track before finally collapsing after crossing the finish line and immediately snapping both her front ankles. She was euthanized in the dirt where she lay, wracked with pain, a victim of the dirty business of thoroughbred racing.
Eight Belles' tragic breakdown was no freak accident. Rather, it was a glimpse into an industry quietly responsible for more than 1,000 fatal horse breakdowns on U.S. tracks each year.
In the year since Eight Belles' death, PETA has worked very hard on this issue. PETA has actually changed the media coverage of horse racing so that injuries and deaths are no longer ignored. PETA sparked Congressional hearings to expose the cruelty that the horse-racing industry tries to hide. PETA has even awakened the conscience of some of the abusers and heard from whistleblowers, whom they are working with now. PETA is fighting vigorously for more vital reforms, including the following:
A ban on all drugs designed to push horses beyond their limits
Softer track surfaces to protect vulnerable horses' bones and joints
A ban on the use of whips
An end to the racing of young horses before their legs are fully formed and strengthened.
An end to the practice of shipping thoroughbreds overseas, where most end up in a dog-food can
PETA investigators have also documented the repulsive underside of the misnamed "sport of kings" ("sport of butchers" is more accurate)—owners who sell horses who can't win races anymore to slaughterhouses ... trainers who give horses drugs to keep them running until they drop, break their legs, or wreck their health ... industry leaders who prefer the hardest track surface because, although it breaks the most bones, it pounds the most speed out of the horses and brings these greedy souls the most profitable wins.
With your help, PETA can stop the hideous abuses that these and other long-suffering animals endure. Help us
work to get drugs out of the stables in order to allow hurt horses to rest?

We live in a country where 95 percent of eggs on the market come from birds kept in cages so small they can barely move, where mother pigs are treated like piglet-breeding machines and made to live in crates barely larger than their own bodies, where chickens raised for meat are kept in crowded barns where the air is almost unbreathable, and where castrations, tail dockings, toe clippings, brandings and other mutilations are done routinely and without regard to the pain they cause. Kept out of the public eye, these cruelties and others constitute the daily experience of hundreds of millions of farm animals. >>Read More

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the American meat industry produced more than 1.4 billion tons of waste in 1997—five tons for every U.S. citizen and 130 times the volume of human waste. Michael Jacobson, the longtime executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, adds the fact that just one midsized feedlot churns out half a million pounds of manure each day. "The methane that cattle and their manure produce has a global warming effect equal to that of 33 million automobiles," the Center reports in its book Six Arguments for a Greener Diet.

..."Cruelty is cruelty", Wayne Pacelle, President of the Humane Society of the US says, "and it's been our assumption that if decent people see images of farm animals suffering, they will have a similar reaction." Farm Sanctuary works to protect farm animals from cruelty, inspire change in the way society views and treats farm animals, and promote compassionate vegan living.
We envision a world where the violence that animal agriculture inflicts upon people, animals and the environment has ended, and where instead we exercise values of compassion.
Turkeys originally come from North and Central America, and may have been here as far back as 10 million years ago—long before the pilgrims. Turkey did not become the quintessential Thanksgiving entrée until the 20th century when the industry developed a breed of bird that was easier to de-feather—mature turkeys have more than 3,500 feathers. Commercial turkeys are not able to fly and often have trouble walking as they grow abnormally large, but wild turkeys can fly up to 55 miles per hour, and run up to 25 miles per hour.

I am very disappointed that a supposedly progressive-leaning newspaper [Eugene Weekly] would stoop to promoting blatant cruelty to animals by glorifying "rodeo queens" in a three-page article complete with cover page. I am hoping to see a follow-up article which goes behind the scenes to reveal the callous disregard with which the non-voluntary participants in this violent activity are subjected. A good place to acquaint EW readers with the realities of rodeo can be found at sharkonline.org - Barb Lomow, Eugene, Oregon

In his letter describing the ways that Paradise City Cafe is a green business, Norman Lent says, "My greatest green commitment is in reducing soy as much as possible". Mr. Lent then explains that planting of soy causes deforestation. This argument contains a serious error. It is important to realize that all this soy being grown is being grown to feed livestock, not people. When plants are fed to animals whose flesh, milk or eggs will be eaten, the amount of animal food produced is far less than the amount of plant food fed to the animals. The feed to meat ratio varies depending on species and location, but on average it is 4:1. 80% of the crops grown in the US are grown as livestock feed. Therefore, the way to protect the rainforest is not to avoid soy, but to avoid animal foods. More than 90% of all Amazon rain forest land cleared has been cleared for meat production.
Animal agriculture is the world's largest source of water pollution, emits 2/3 of the world's acid rain causing ammonia, contributes more to global warming than anything else, and uses huge amounts of water and energy (1/2 the water and 1/3 the petroleum in the US ). The negative impact of animal agriculture on the environment cannot be overstated. Mr. Lent could best demonstrate his commitment to the environment, by serving up only plant based foods. Now that would truly be green. - Nettie Schwager, Corvallis, Oregon

The body can synthesize some of the fats it needs from the foods you eat. However, two essential fatty acids cannot be synthesized in the body and can be taken in the diet from plant foods. Their names—linolenic and linoleic acid—are not important. What is important is that these basic fats are used to build specialized fats called omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids... >> MORE
Some people may have heard that fish are good sources of essential fatty acids. However, the high amounts of fat and cholesterol and the lack of fiber make fish a poor choice. Fish are also often high in mercury and other environmental toxins that have no place in an optimal diet.
Fish oils have been popularized as an aid against everything from heart problems to arthritis. The bad news about fish oils is that omega-3s in fish oils are highly unstable molecules that tend to decompose and, in the process, unleash dangerous free radicals. Research has shown that omega-3s are found in a more stable form in vegetables, fruits, and beans.
Whether you are interested in promoting cardiovascular health, ensuring the proper growth and development of your child, or relieving pain, a vegetarian diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes can help you achieve adequate intake of the essential fatty acids. >>MORE

Oprah Winfrey has decided to undergo a spiritual and physical makeover... she's going vegan for 21 days! Inspired by Kathy Freston, spiritual counselor and author of best-seller book,
Quantum Wellness, Oprah is currently following a cleansing diet. The plan is to eliminate caffeine, sugar, alcohol, gluten and all animal products from her diet for a full 21 days. Oprah states, "How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?"
Oprah is currently keeping a blog of her daily experiences. She writes,
"Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying. I had been focused on what I had to give up—sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. 'What's left?' I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight, beginning with breakfast—strawberry rhubarb wheat-free crepes."

Raising animals for food contributes substantially to global warming and is responsible for more water pollution, topsoil depletion, deforestation, and wildlife destruction than any other human activity.
...Additionally, raising and feeding farmed animals wastes crops that could be fed to humans, furthering global malnourishment and starvation.
...An effective long-term solution to these multiple global crises must include a transition to plant-based diets of vegetables, fruits, legumes, and grains.

A California meat company on Sunday issued the largest beef recall in history, 143 million pounds, some of which was used in school lunch programs, Department of Agriculture officials announced.
The recall started after an undercover video from Humane Society of the United States was distributed. The video raised questions about the safety of the meat, because cows that cannot walk, called downer cows, pose an added risk of diseases including mad cow disease. The federal government has banned downer cows from the food supply.
The tainted meat was dumped at the Waimanalo Gulch Landfill on the Waianae Coast of Oahu. (source and video by Animal Advocates)
