Veg Spotlight

Being vegan is about recognizing that eating animals is absolutely unnecessary. It is about making choices that are a true reflection of our ethical and moral principles, and about recognizing that custom and tradition do not justify atrocities. - Brenda Davis

Veg Wisdom

The person who kills for fun is announcing that, could he get away with it, he'd kill you for fun. Your...life may be of no consequence to anyone else but is invaluable to you because it's the only one you've got. Exactly the same is true of each individual deer, hare, rabbit, fox, fish, pheasant and butterfly. Humans should enjoy their own lives, not taking others'. - Brigid Brophy - British Writer (1929-1995)

Whenever people say "we mustn't be sentimental", you can take it they are about to do something cruel. And if they add, "we must be realistic", they mean they are going to make money out of it. - Brigid Brophy

Veg Wisdom

I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there. - Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997)

Veg Wisdom

I hope to make people realize how totally helpless animals are, how dependent on us, trusting as a child must that we will be kind and take care of their needs ...[They] are an obligation put on us, a responsibility we have no right to neglect, nor to violate by cruelty. - James Herriot (1916 - )

Veg Wisdom

If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian. We feel better about ourselves and better about the animals, knowing we're not contributing to their pain. - Paul & Linda McCartney

Veg Spotlight

I am hopeful that we are making progress, that we are creating vegans faster than they are creating non-vegans! - Dr. Ruth Heidrich

If we continue to address the issue of the environment where we live as though we're the only species that lives here, we'll create a disaster for ourselves. - Gaylord Nelson, politician, founder of Earth Day (1916 - 2005)

Veg Wisdom

I spoke often in Congress against the war in Vietnam and commented on congresspersons hiding from the reality of war by saying 'many eat the meat but few go to the slaughterhouse'. I said it so often I became a vegetarian. - Rep. Andrew Jacobs

  • Earth Day - April 22

  • International Respect for Chickens Day - May 4

  • World Vegetarian Day - October 1

  • World Farm Animals Day - October 2

  • World Vegan Day - November 1

  • Gentle Thanksgiving - 4th Thursday of November

For pictures and a full list of events,
visit our Calendar & Photos Page.

Outreach comes in many forms, as does education.

Tabling and leafleting are two of the easiest and quickest ways to distribute veg literature and it gives us a chance to talk one-on-one with those who have questions. These are our favorite activities and we do them as often as possible. Books, dvds, brochures, recipes, nutritional information and magazines we hand out contain a wealth of relevant, useful information. They are concise, well-written and free to anyone interested in learning the benefits of veganism. We are especially fond of this type of direct assistance because we reach a huge number of new people and we have a chance to debunk some old myths, answer relevant questions and offer helpful encouragement. (Plus we make a lot of new friends!)

Since EVEN is an outreach group, we frequently staff information tables in and around town at local health food stores, libraries, the University, Lane Community College, downtown at lunch time, corporate health fairs, Earth Day celebrations, the Saturday Market, the Holiday Market, summer festivals, picnics and neighborhood fairs and get-togethers! We will go to almost any event when available.

Look for the big, beautiful, bright yellow EVEN sign hand-painted and donated by Stephanie Schaibley for exactly such purposes. (Thank you, Stephanie!) If you see us, please stop by, say hello, and grab a vegan snack.

And even more forms of outreach:

Being out and about frequently means getting a lot of questions later. EVEN receives an enormous number of emails all requiring personal replies. Answering emails and phone inquiries is another great opportunity for education. It takes more time, but we like the chance to address individual questions and concerns. It requires more extensive research and follow-up, but it is highly productive for you and for us.

Like the rest of our website, our news blog is filled with powerful, life-changing information. Items are longer-lived and not time-sensitive, therefore, they are always up to date for visitors.

Our newsletters and announcements contain info on various topics that can answer some questions and raise others. If you are on EVEN's email list, you can receive these announcements at no cost. (Your email info is safe with us because we never sell, rent or share your personal email.)

EVEN's Exclusive Interviews with prominent folks in the field of veganism are:

! educational
! informational
! inspirational

Speakers, lectures and EVEN's Think and Go Veg workshops are all additional means of fulfilling vegan education and outreach roles. So many lectures by knowledgeable, fun and distinguished presenters all of whom are willing to share, and it's all free to the public.

EVEN's website contains an abundance of helpful information. Links, books, articles, recipes, ideas, and other resources that can be the means to open a new path in anyone's life.

EVEN is proactive in adding worthwhile projects to our outreach efforts. Even with our limited resources, we love to be creative in designing and implementing vegan education programs that allow veganism to forge its truth to new ears in new places. The power of communications becomes exponential through positive networking.

Carl Sagan once said that, "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known."

EVEN focuses on outreach and vegan education because that is correct.

Note: EVEN is available (time permitting) to speak to your group, class, organization or company about the benefits of a plant-based diet, so just ask! Contact Us We'd be glad to help.
